Over the years, medical advancements have been improving the quality of life for the disabled. Doctors, have come to realize that a dog has the ability to assist the disabled, and provide for people, what medicine cannot!
Dogs can detect if the blood sugar level is off on a diabetic. Help the hearing impaired, assist the blind in getting around. As well as detect depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.
Then there is the dog that can tell the epileptic that they will have a seizure before it happens. Humans cannot do that! To state that these dogs will have our lives in their paws is an understatement.
For the disabled, they have a choice of using a service dog, or hiring a human caretaker. The obvious is to get the dog. As treatments will advance, so will the use of these amazing animals.
Service animals are protected by Federal law, and have a job to do! Unfortunately, I have encountered many people claiming that their untrained animal is a service just so that it can ride in shopping carts. When I have entered that business with my legitimate traded service dog, these businesses are concerned that my dog will be in a cart next! As you can imagine, we have enough barriers as it is, but when john q public do this there is another barrier!
When you encounter a dog that is not really a service. You may ask the handler “What is it trained to do” that should let you know if it is, or is not a service!
Fortunately, the Federal Department of Justice has written a mandate called the “American’s with Disability Act.” Or also known as the ADA. Some business will discriminate against service animals and refuse access. The ADA guarantees that the disabled have the right to everyday activities. Most of this discrimination occurs due to ignorance, education is the best weapon!
Please help educate: Pass this information along so that their will no longer be discrimination in the business so that equality prevails for the disabled with service animals.
