The American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits the exclusion of people with disabilities from everyday activities, such as buying an item at the store, watching a movie in a theater, enjoying a meal at a local restaurant, exercising at the local health club or having the car serviced at the local garage. To meet the goals of the ADA, the law established requirements for private business of all sizes. These requirements first went into effect on January 26,1992, and continue for both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
Service animals are animals that are individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities-- such as guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling wheelchairs, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, or performing other special tasks. Service animals are working animals, THEY ARE NOT PETS!
Businesses that serve the public MUST allow people with disabilities to enter with their service animal.
For businesses that continue to violate the ADA, and discriminate against the Disabled, there is a Shame on You List, to expose them, and for you to have the opportunity of letting them know what you think!
Yes there are businesses that go beyond the standards of the ADA, and we want to recognize their efforts, Honor List!
If you are disabled, and are in a situation of civil rights violation, let us know if we can help. Education is our best defense!
Please help educate, pass this info along so that there will no longer be discrimination in the business and so that equality prevails for all disabled with service animals.
Thanks
